Latest News from “Altnaharra Hotel”

March/April 2012

We are now officially open for the 2012 season after our usual ‘winter break’ and we’re very much looking forward to seeing many of our past guests again and to welcoming new visitors.  It’s always good to share our enthusiasm for the Highlands with those of you who have never visited our picturesque and tranquil area, which we feel remains unspoilt by the passage of time.

We’ve been lucky enough to have had a relatively mild winter this year. We’ve kept ourselves busy during the winter months, making sure that the hotel is ready and waiting for the new season and firming up on exciting fishing and shooting opportunities for our guests with the local estates.  We’ve also had the chance to ensure our boats are in top condition ready to be returned to the lochs.

We’re pleased to welcome Daniel our new chef to the Altnaharra.  His speciality is cooking with locally sourced game and fish.  His food is unpretentious and full of flavour and his Scottish breakfasts are completely delicious.

Fishing

We were very pleased with last year’s catch by hotel guests, which added up to well over 1,000 salmon, sea trout and brown trout.  If you’re thinking of fishing with us this year, feel free to give us a call to chat through your requirements.  If you’re a trout and salmon novice, we’ll be able to advise you on how to get the most out of your first fishing experience.  Maybe you’d like to book your very own ghillie who will be able to give you fly fishing tuition. If you’re an experienced fisherman, tell us where and when you want to fish and we’ll do our best to arrange it for you.

We have once again secured boats on Loch Hope’s South End, Middle Bay and North End.  We also have three boats on Loch Naver, plus our own stretch of the River Mudale. Then there is no shortage of access to excellent wild brown trout lochs, several of which are exclusive to us.  Plus, we’re regularly able to add exclusive offers of rods and beats outside the hotels regular fishing.

Opportunities for Shooting Enthusiasts

We have some excellent stalking opportunities available later this year.  North West Sutherland offers some of the best stalking in Scotland and allows you to explore some of the most breath-taking landscape in the world.  We can also arrange rough shooting, driven days & woodcock shooting.

Self catering

If the idea of a self catering break appeals to you, with the option of popping into the hotel for the occasional meal or use of the games room, then our self catering cottage could be what you are looking for.  Mallart Cottage is literally next door to the hotel, overlooking the burn.  Call us to find out the rates – plus we can still help organise all your sporting needs.

The Highlands Experience

If it’s tranquillity you’re looking for, then Altnaharra is the perfect place for you to relax by the open fire and slow down your pace of life.  It’s our aim that the atmosphere here should make you feel like you’re staying with friends.  But once you’ve charged your batteries, there’s plenty to do besides fishing and stalking.  Why not try horse-riding on the beach, climb a munro (Ben Klibreck is within walking distance of the hotel) or check out the surf on the north coast?  Or if it’s more leisurely pursuits you’re after take in a museum, a whisky distillery or the Castle of Mey in Caithness.

What more can I say, except we look forward to seeing you soon.

altanahrraThe Scottish Highlands is one of the most well known landscapes in the world. With its rich and colourful past, the mere mention of the Highlands evokes images of large men in kilts charging into historic battle (albeit led by an Australian with blue face paint!). They are one of the most vast and distinctive rural area in Britain and yet incredibly the proportion of us Brits that have actually experienced the Highlands first hand is minimal! It’s amazing really – we travel all over the globe in search of new and edifying sights, and yet we seem to have forgotten that one of the worlds’ best is right on our very doorstep!

Altnaharra is situated in the North of the Highlands; it epitomises the very best of Scottish country life and the hamlet boasts truly remarkable views of both Loch Naver and Ben Klibreck. It first opened its doors in 1820 – just a few months after the birth of Queen Victoria – and ever since that time the area has become a popular destination for both fishing/shooting enthusiasts and mountaineers, as well as those just looking to get away from stress and torment of city life.

Of course, as wonderful as the natural beauty of Altnaharra may be, there can be no overestating the comfort offered by an open fire and fresh dinner at the end of a long day outdoors, and that’s where the Altnaharra Hotel really comes into its own. Combining the traditional style and decor of the original building with all the mod cons that you might expect in a brand new hotel, the 14 luxury en-suite bedrooms are guaranteed to provide the perfect base while you enjoy the Highlands at their most authentic.
