25 May 2012 – Hottest Place in Scotland

Here in Altnaharra we’re well known for setting the record for the coldest temperature, so yesterday was rather a surprise when the mercury soared to 27C (80.6F), and we were officially the hottest place in Scotland in 2012! We just beat the 26.9C (80.4F) recorded in Aviemore – and fell only two degrees short of the record for May, which was set in Edinburgh in 1992. Coincidentally, the temperature was almost a direct mirror of the coldest temperature recorded in the village in 1995, at -27.2C.

The balmy weather – less than a week after snow fell in some parts of the Highlands – looked set to continue through the weekend.
